The Bowl of Mischief

Synopsis

One day a holy man, Phufadia, goes into the desert in search of wisdom—and finds an abandoned child in stead. Phufadia tries to teach the boy, whom he names Ranji, the secrets of life, wisdom, and happiness. But Ranji is an imp and a scamp and so full of mischief that he finds it hard to sit still long enough to hear what Phufadia has to say. Besides, he would much rather play than think about such things. Many years pass. Phufadia dies and Ranji is left to survive on his own. How he wishes the wise man were still there to teach him! Why didn't he listen when Phufadia spoke. Soon Ranji finds himself head-to-head in a battle of wits against a fearsome villain, the cruel and mighty Superus. Ranji knows his mischief won't save him now. He must act wisely—or he will die.

A Bowl of Mischief was published in 1992 by Henry Holt and Company. The jacket illustration is by Michael A. Donato and the jacket design is by Matthew Van Fleet.

A Bowl of Mischief is unlike any of the other books in its setting and action. Its still fun and exciting and a good read. The story has a deeply eastern feeling to it and unfolds beautifully.
